Peek Inside – 2004 Porsche Carrera GT Cockpit
The interior of the Carrera GT showcases a design shaped entirely by function, echoing the spirit of a purebred race car. Let’s peek inside the the Porsche Carrera GT cockpit.
Porsche Carrera GT Cockpit
The guiding principle behind the interior was uncompromising lightness, achieved through the focused use of advanced materials. Alongside leather, carbon fibre and magnesium define the cabin. In areas such as the door sills, composite components are either coated in a finish that mirrors the appearance of magnesium or left exposed, proudly displaying their intricate fibre structure as seen on the door panels.
Rising toward the dashboard, the composite fibre centre console is lined with a galvanised magnesium surface. The leather-clad shift lever sits midway up, close to the steering wheel, capped with a ball-shaped knob made from layered birch and ash. This lightweight design was inspired by the Porsche 917 race car, which featured a balsa-wood shift knob.
Despite this purposeful, motorsport-inspired minimalism, comfort has not been ignored. Amenities such as a navigation system, a Bose audio system, an interior air filter with an activated charcoal insert, and optional air conditioning provide a high level of convenience.
Composite Carbon-Fibre Seats
The seats are finished in extra-smooth leather in interior colour and come with manual adjustment for length, since electric motors adjusting the seats would hardly be appropriate in a thoroughbred sports/racing car. This alone saves around two kilograms per seat. The seat shells are formed from a composite based on carbon fibre and aramide. The aramide layer prevents splintering and provides greater flexibility than pure carbon fibre. This thoughtful material choice reduces weight dramatically. Each Carrera GT seat weighs only 10.7 kilograms (23.6 lb).
Premium Sound System
At no additional cost, the Carrera GT was available with the Porsche Online Pro navigation radio paired with a Bose audio system. Bose developed a dedicated sound system specifically for the Carrera GT, aiming to minimise volume and mass while achieving optimal speaker placement. The high bass pressure contributes to impressive audio clarity, with cavities in the monocoque sills acting as natural resonance chambers. Paired with two woofers, two subwoofers, two tweeters, dual 100-watt digital amplifiers and an analogue equaliser, the system delivers outstanding audio performance.
