What is the InnoDrive?

Technology

The Porsche InnoDrive improves the performance and efficiency of the Porsche Adaptive Cruise Control system. Not only it thinks what happens at the moment, it thinks several kilometres ahead. So what is the InnoDrive?

What is the InnoDrive?

The Porsche InnoDrive system makes the autonomous driving experience safer. InnoDrive works with the PDK transmission and the Adaptive Cruise Control, and regulates driving speed, and adapts it automatically and predictively. Using the navigation data, as well as radar and video sensors, it calculates the optimum acceleration and deceleration values for the next three kilometres (1.8 miles), and activates them via the engine, PDK and brake system.

The electronic co-pilot automatically takes into account corners and gradients, and also speed limits if wished. The driver has the possibility of individually defining the maximum speed at any time. The pre-set speed can be changed manually and overridden with the accelerator pedal. If the currently permitted maximum speed is exceeded, the assistant issues a visual and audible warning.

The system detects the current traffic situation using radar and video sensors and adapts control accordingly. The system even recognises roundabouts. Like with conventional adaptive cruise control, InnoDrive also continuously adapts the distance to the vehicles in front.

Another additional function of the Porsche InnoDrive is Active Lane Keeping. It helps the driver by continuously assisting with steering angle. This is particularly helpful in congestion, in slow-moving traffic and on monotonous motorway journeys. The function can be activated on well-maintained country roads and motorways. The maximum operating speed for the Active Lane Keeping is 210 km/h (130 mph).
