What is the eTurbo?
eTurbo is a new electric exhaust turbocharger. It was developed for the T-Hybrid system in the Porsche 911. It made its debut with the new 3.6-litre engine in the 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.
What is the eTurbo?
The eTurbo is an electric turbocharger. It is first used in with the 3.6-litre boxer engine, where it is positioned on the right behind the engine. There are new exhaust manifolds, which guide the exhaust gases from both cylinder banks to the charger. The eTurbo features an electric motor, which is connected directly to the turbine shaft, and sits between the compressor and the turbine wheel.
The eTurbo is designed so that the integrated electric motor can both deliver torque to the turbocharger shaft and generate electrical power from its rotation. As a generator, it produces up to 11 kW of electrical power. It uses this energy to feed the electric motor in the Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK) or to charge the high-voltage battery.
Benefits of the eTurbo
The electric motor drastically shortens the time required for the turbo to spool up. So the full boost pressure is consistently available within a very short time. This means that there is basically no “turbo lag”. This ensures that the boxer engine maintains the ideal air-fuel mixture ratio and still builds up torque quickly.
With its responsiveness and performance capability, the eTurbo makes it possible to use only one turbocharger. The innovative system regulates the boost pressure automatically. It uses the generator function of the electric motor, which means that it isn’t necessary to have a wastegate to limit the pressure.
