1997 Porsche Boxster – 10 Fast Facts
Six-Cylinder Engine
The 1997 Porsche Boxster is powered by a six-cylinder boxer engine. This 2.5-litre engine delivers maximum output of 150 kW (204 hp) at 6,000 rpm. The maximum torque of 245 Nm is reached at 4,500 rpm.
Five-Speed Manual
As standard, the engine’s power is delivered to the rear-wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
Tiptronic S
In addition to the manual, a five-speed automatic transmission, known as Tiptronic S was optionally available. In automatic mode, the selector lever has the positions P, R, N and D. When the lever is moved from the right automatic gate to the left into its manual shift position, gears are selected using the paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
Mid-Engine Design
With the Boxster, Porsche demonstrated that the mid-engine concept can also be perfectly applied to everyday sports cars. And even more importantly. The mid-engine design offers excellent driving characteristics.
Agile Steering
The rack-and-pinion steering is hydraulically assisted. Its design was chosen to guarantee stable straight-line tracking at high speeds and agile turn-in response during extreme cornering.
Soft Top
It takes just 12 seconds to open or close the roof electrically via a toggle switch. For safety reasons, this mechanism only functions when the handbrake is engaged and the vehicle is stationary. During the development of the soft top, the engineers placed the highest priority on minimizing wind noise. Hardtop was available as an option.
16″ Wheels
As standard, the Boxster came with 16-inch wheels, while the 17-inch wheels were available as an option. The standard tyre size is 205/55 ZR 16 at the front and 225/50 ZR 16 at the rear.
Race Car Brakes
The Boxster was the first car to use lightweight, four-piston monobloc brake callipers. These one-piece callipers, with their exceptional rigidity, were also used in the Porsche 911 GT1 hypercar. The brake discs are internally ventilated at both the front and rear. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a standard feature.
How Fast is It?
The 1997 Porsche Boxster can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6,9 seconds with the manual transmission. With the Tiptronic S the same sprint takes 7,6 seconds.
Top Speed
The top speed of the first Porsche Boxster is 240 km/h with the manual and 235 km/h with the Tiptronic S transmission.
