
3.6-Litre Turbocharged – The T-Hybrid Engine (2024)
Porsche developed a new six-cylinder, 3.6-litre boxer engine for the T-Hybrid powertrain, which made its debut in the 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.
3.6-Litre Turbocharged
The new engine is based on the 3.0-litre engine. With a bore enlarged to 97mm and a stroke increased to 81mm, the Porsche engineers increased the engine’s displacement to 3.6 litres. With precise camshaft control that is matched to the respective speed and load conditions, the engine delivers high power and torque values with optimised fuel consumption.
The new six-cylinder engine has adopted the solid roller cam followers used in motorsport. Compared to the bucket tappets in the previous model, they reduce frictional losses and, therefore, improve efficiency. At the same time, they increase the robustness of the valve train at high speeds. Manual adjustment of the valve clearance during maintenance is not necessary.
Single Electric Turbocharger
The 3.6-litre engine is charged with a new electric exhaust turbocharger (eTurbo). It features an electric motor that sits between the compressor and turbine wheel. The electric motor drastically shortens the time required for the turbo to spool up, meaning that the full boost pressure is consistently available within a very short time.
With its responsiveness and performance capability of the eTurbo, there is no need for second turbocharger. The innovative system regulates the boost pressure automatically, so there no wastegate either.
The eTurbo is positioned on the right behind the boxer engine. There are new exhaust manifolds which guide the exhaust gases to the charger from both cylinder banks. The corresponding charge-air cooler is located above the boxer engine. It receives its cooling air through the grilles in the rear lid.
The 3.6-litre boxer engine in the 911 Carrera GTS delivers maximum output of 485 PS (357 kW). In total, the T-Hybrid system delivers a maximum output of 541 PS (398 kW). With the electric turbocharger, the engine responds instantly in all driving situations. Even at an engine speed of 1500rpm, it produces 500 Newton metres of torque. The full torque of 610 Nm is available already from less than 2000rpm.
