2017 Porsche 718 Cayman – 10 Fast Facts

Porsche 718 Cayman (982)

In 2016, Porsche introduced the third generation (982) Cayman. In addition to the new engine, it also got a new model designation. It is now called the 718 Cayman. Here are 10 fast facts about the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman.

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman – 10 Fast Facts

Turbocharged Engine

The Porsche 718 Cayman is powered by a turbocharged flat four-cylinder engine. The 2.0-litre engine delivers maximum output of 220 kW (300 hp). The new engine is characterized by good throttle response, free acceleration even at the highest rpm and a passionate sound.

380 Nm of Torque

The 2.0-litre engine of the 718 Cayman produces up to 380 Nm (280 lb.-ft.) of torque. The maximum torque is generated between 1,950 and 4,500 rpm. This tremendous thrust from the turbocharged engine provides rewarding levels of responsiveness even at low revs.

Six-Speed Manual Transmission

718 Cayman comes as standard with a six-speed manual transmission. It has been reinforced with new components and a stronger clutch due to the increased torque of the new turbocharged engines.

Seven-Speed PDK

The seven-speed PDK transmission (Porsche Doppelkupplung) was available as an option. And like before, it offers both automatic and manual modes. However, the direction of shifting in manual mode has been reversed to correspond to the logic used in race cars. Pushing the gear selector forward initiates a downshift, while pulling it back commands an upshift. Furthermore, the transmission holds the driver-selected gear and does not upshift at redline in manual mode.

Agile Handling

The electromechanical steering system, which is ten percent more direct compared to the predecessor, makes the 718 Cayman even more agile and easier to handle. The new model incorporates the steering gear of the 911 Turbo with its quicker ratio.

Retuned Chassis

The chassis was completely retuned. To further enhance precision and lateral stability in driving performance, Porsche modified many components of the rear suspension. A new cross member strengthens the rear subframe, improving lateral rigidity. Shock absorbers with larger pistons also improve wheel guidance due to their greater rigidity.

Optional PASM

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with a 10 millimeter (0.39 inch) lower ride height was available as an option. It offers an even greater spread between ride comfort and agile handling thanks to extended sensor technology with an increased bandwidth of damper control. At each spring strut, a height sensor measures ride height, and three accelerometers measure the g-load into the chassis, enabling an even more precise and sensitive control.

Braking Power

The 718 Cayman employs the powerful brake system that was previously used in the Cayman S. It features four-piston aluminium monobloc callipers with 330 mm front and 299 mm rear brake discs.

18″ Wheels

The 718 Cayman is fitted as standard with 18″ wheels. The tyre sizes are 235/45 ZR 18 on the front axle and 265/45 ZR 18 on the rear axle.

How Fast is It?

With the manual transmission, the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, and to 100 km/h in 5,1 seconds. With the PDK, the sprint to 60 mph takes 4,7 seconds to 100 km/h 4.9 seconds. If the car is fitted with the optional Sport Chrono Package and the PDK the sprint to 60 mph takes just 4,5 seconds. The top speed is 275 km/h.
