2009 Porsche Cayman – 10 Fast Facts
2.9-Litre Engine
2009 Porsche Cayman is powered by a mid-mounted 2.9-litre engine. This compact and lightweight unit replaced the 2.7-litre engine used in the 2007 Porsche Cayman.
265 Horsepower
The 2.9-litre six-cylinder engine offers maximum output of 195 kW (265 bhp) at 7,200 rpm and maximum torque of 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) between 4,400 and 6,000 rpm.
Six-Speed Manual
The 987.2 generation Cayman comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. The gearbox is combined with a self-adjusting so-called X-Tend clutch registering the gradual decrease in clutch pad thickness. The big advantage of this system is that it reduces the increase in foot pressure required in the course of time until reaching the wear limit by approximately 50 per cent versus a conventional clutch.
PDK Transmission
Replacing the Tiptronis S, this was the first Cayman that was available with the PDK transmission. The PDK double-clutch transmission shifts gears up to 60 percent faster than a manual gearbox or automatic transmission.
Supreme Agility in Bends
With the 987.2 update, the suspension set-up was modified for the higher power of the engines and optimised for extra comfort combined with superior sportiness. This specific set-up in combination with the very stiff, flexurally and torsionally rigid body gives the Cayman its characteristic driving behaviour with superior safety reserves and enhanced driving comfort.
Rack-and-Pinion Steering
The hydraulically-assisted rack-and-pinion steering with a variable transmission ratio converts the driver’s steering commands into appropriate action on the wheels. This allows, first, superior agility on winding roads and, second, a very high standard of driving stability even at very high speeds.
Optional PASM
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with an electronically controlled damper system was optionally available for the Cayman. The PASM offer to modes; a sporting but comfortable set-up for everyday motoring and a particularly dynamic suspension for a really committed style of driving. With the PASM suspension, the car is also lowered by 10 millimetres (0.39”) compared to the standard.
Superb Porsche Brakes
Cayman provides excellent braking performance. At the front axle there are four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed callipers with 318 millimetres (12.52”) brake discs. At the rear the Cayman comes with 299 mm brake discs, interacting with four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed callipers.
17-Inch Wheels
The Cayman was equipped as standard with 17-inch wheels, while larger wheels were available as an option. The standard tyre dimensions were 205/55 ZR 17 at the front and 235/50 ZR 17 at the rear.
Is is Fast?
2009 Porsche Cayman can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and reach 200 km/h in 22.0 seconds. With the PDK transmission, the sprint to 100 km/h takes 5.7 seconds and the speed of 200 km/h can be reached in 21.8 seconds. The top speed is 265 km/h (164 mph) with the manual and 263 km/h (163 mph) with the PDK. So the answer is yes. The Cayman is pretty fast.
